UPI disputes: where the money goes when a payment hangs
Failed but debited, sent to the wrong number, or stuck on pending — the refund timelines and who to escalate to.

A UPI payment that fails after the debit is the most common money scare in the country — and the most recoverable. Failed-but-debited amounts auto-reverse, usually within a day; the app's transaction page is where the status actually updates.
If a reversal does not land in the promised window, raise the dispute inside the app first — every UPI app has a per-transaction complaint flow that reaches your bank with the reference number attached.
Money sent to a WRONG person is different: the system cannot claw back a completed transfer. Contact your bank the same day, and request the beneficiary's bank to seek consent for reversal. Speed and politeness recover more than anger.
The escalation ladder, in order: the app's support, your bank's grievance cell, and then the banking ombudsman once thirty days pass. Keep the UTR number from the transaction detail page — it is the one identifier every desk on that ladder asks for first.
