DigiLocker, PAN and Aadhaar: the documents worth keeping digital

Lost originals cost time and money. A well-set-up DigiLocker means the important papers are always in your pocket — and legally valid.

DigiLocker, PAN and Aadhaar: the documents worth keeping digital

Most of us still treat a plastic folder of photocopies as the family vault. There is a better way: DigiLocker documents issued directly by the issuing authority are legally valid, and traffic police, banks and colleges accept them.

Set-up takes ten minutes. Install the app, verify with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and pull your issued documents — driving licence, vehicle RC, PAN verification record, board marksheets — straight from the source departments.

Two habits make it genuinely useful. First, pull documents before you need them; the fetch needs an OTP and you do not want that dance at a counter. Second, note that a scanned upload of your own is just a copy — the 'Issued' section is where the legal validity lives.

Keep the originals safe at home. The point is not to replace them — it is to stop carrying them.
