Explore your own city like a tourist: a weekend walking plan
Old markets, morning ghats and the food street you always drive past — a simple plan for seeing home with fresh eyes.

Every city keeps its best hour for people on foot. Pick a Sunday, start early, and treat your own neighbourhood the way you would treat a new one.
Begin where the city begins — the oldest market you know of, an hour after it opens. Markets are the city's memory: the shop boards, the trades grouped street by street, the breakfast stalls that have outlived every trend.
Walk, do not drive, between stops. The distance between two landmarks is where the city actually lives — the press-wallah's corner, the century-old building above a mobile shop, the tree the whole lane organises itself around.
End with the food you always postpone. Every city has a dish it does better than anywhere else within a hundred kilometres; eating it where it was invented is the cheapest travel there is.
